NASA Launched an Emergency Mission to Save a 20-Year-Old Space Telescope

NASA's Swift Observatory, launched in 2004 to study gamma-ray bursts, is at risk of falling back into Earth's atmosphere after recent solar storms pushed its orbit lower. NASA has hired a company called Katalyst Space Technologies to intercept it with a spacecraft called Link, which launched on Friday. The goal is to boost Swift's orbit and extend its life.

Why It Matters

Swift has been a key tool for astronomers worldwide for two decades โ€” losing it would be a genuine setback for space science.
