Privacy Advocates Warn FTC: Elon Musk's X Is a 'Serious Risk' to User Data
Ars TechnicaยทFriday, 3 July 2026

Advocacy groups have filed a warning with the US Federal Trade Commission urging it to reject Elon Musk's effort to end regulatory monitoring of X, the platform formerly known as Twitter. They argue X poses a serious privacy risk to Americans, partly due to concerns about how it handles data for AI development. The FTC has existing oversight arrangements with X from a previous settlement.
Why It Matters
X has tens of millions of Indian users. If US oversight of the platform weakens, the data practices that watchdogs are worried about would apply to non-US users too.
