Papua Separatists Kill American Pilot in Targeted Attack on Indonesia and the U.S.
The GuardianยทFriday, 3 July 2026

Separatist rebels from the West Papua National Liberation Army shot dead an American pilot identified as Nicholas F. Gosse and set his civilian plane on fire in Indonesia's Papua region. A rebel spokesperson said it was a deliberate 'message' to both the U.S. and Indonesian governments. The killing comes amid a long-running independence conflict in the region.
Why It Matters
Indonesia is a key partner in the Indo-Pacific region, and violence targeting American citizens there adds pressure on a strategically important area where India also has growing interests.
