FAA May Allow Supersonic Jets Over US Cities โ If They Can Skip the Sonic Boom
Ars TechnicaยทFriday, 3 July 2026

The US Federal Aviation Administration has proposed new rules that would allow supersonic passenger jets to fly over American cities, as long as they are quiet enough to avoid a sonic boom. Current rules ban overland supersonic flight. The proposal would effectively legalise a new class of quieter supersonic aircraft.
Why It Matters
If this rule passes, it could kick off a new era of supersonic commercial aviation globally, dramatically cutting long-haul flight times on routes that matter to Indian travellers.
