South Korea to Turn Every Soldier Into a Drone Operator in Military Overhaul
The GuardianยทSunday, 28 June 2026

South Korea's defence minister announced that all branches of the military will be trained to use drones, calling the technology a 'game changer on the battlefield.' The goal is to train half a million military personnel as drone operators. The minister said all soldiers should be able to use drones 'like a second personal firearm.'
Why It Matters
India is also rapidly expanding its military drone programme and faces similar strategic pressures from neighbours. South Korea's sweeping overhaul sets a benchmark for how major Asian democracies are rethinking warfare.
