Indian Oil Tankers Cross Strait of Hormuz Safely as Crisis Unfolds
The HinduยทSaturday, 20 June 2026
Three Indian-flagged crude oil tankers carrying over 8.6 lakh MT of cargo and 94 Indian crew members successfully transited the Strait of Hormuz and are now heading back to India. Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal announced the safe passage. This comes as Iran said it had closed the strait following continued Israeli strikes on Lebanon.
Why It Matters
India imports a massive share of its oil through the Strait of Hormuz, so any closure directly threatens fuel prices and energy security for every Indian.
