The GuardianยทWednesday, 17 June 2026
Brazil's Supreme Court has sentenced Eduardo Bolsonaro to four years and two months in jail for trying to get the Trump administration to impose sanctions on judges overseeing his father Jair Bolsonaro's coup plot trial. Eduardo Bolsonaro lives in the US and had courted US interference in Brazil's judicial process. The court found him guilty of doing so.
Why It Matters
The case shows how foreign political interference โ even involving a sitting US administration โ can now lead to criminal conviction in another democracy, a precedent with global implications.
