Your Phone May Contain a Mineral That Funds Atrocities in Congo
The Guardian·Wednesday, 10 June 2026
A new investigation by Global Witness claims that major brands including Amazon, Ericsson, and Sony likely sourced coltan — a mineral used in phones — from supply chains controlled by M23 rebels in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The M23 militia has been accused of widespread sexual violence, summary executions, and torture. The companies allegedly acquired the mineral unknowingly.
Why It Matters
Almost anyone with a smartphone could be indirectly connected to this supply chain, making this a consumer issue as much as a human rights one.
