S&P 500 Shuts the Door on SpaceX, OpenAI, and Anthropic

Ars Technica·Sunday, 7 June 2026

The S&P 500 — the most watched stock index in the world — has decided it won't bend its rules to let SpaceX in, and has also signalled it won't fast-track entries for unprofitable AI companies like OpenAI and Anthropic. To get into the S&P 500, a company must be profitable. None of these three currently qualify.

Why It Matters

The S&P 500 is where pension funds and mutual funds — including some Indian ones — park money automatically. Keeping these companies out means regular investors won't automatically get exposure to them.
