Amazon Wants to Build a 5,000-Satellite Phone Network by 2028 โ India Could Be a Key Market
The VergeยทTuesday, 28 July 2026

Amazon has filed an application with the US FCC to launch a new constellation of 5,105 satellites that will provide direct-to-device satellite service for voice, messaging, data, and emergency services. The plan is to start deploying the constellation in 2028 and partner with mobile network operators worldwide. This is separate from its existing Project Kuiper internet service.
Why It Matters
If Amazon's network launches globally, it could bring connectivity to rural and remote parts of India where mobile towers don't reach, affecting hundreds of millions of people.
