Bihar Cop Fired AK-47 at Protesting Students โ Now Suspended, 200 Detained
Times of IndiaยทMonday, 27 July 2026
A police officer in Siwan, Bihar was caught on camera firing an AK-47 during protests by students demanding the education minister's resignation. The officer has been suspended. Lawyers say nearly 200 students were detained, including minors, with many held for over 24 hours. Police say 86 were sent to judicial custody and others released on bonds.
Why It Matters
Students exercising their right to protest were met with what advocates are calling excessive force. The detention of minors and use of an assault rifle against civilians raises serious concerns about policing in Bihar.
