OpenAI Sued After ChatGPT's Medical Advice Allegedly Harmed a User

A 55-year-old former pastor named Scott Winters has sued OpenAI in San Francisco County Superior Court, claiming ChatGPT gave him flawed medical advice in 2025 that caused him harm. The lawsuit was filed by nonprofit Tech Justice on his behalf. This is among the first cases to directly hold an AI chatbot liable for bad health guidance given to a real person.

Why It Matters

Millions of people use ChatGPT for health questions every day โ€” this case could define the legal boundaries of what AI companies are responsible for when their tools give dangerous advice.
