Japan Just Recorded Its First Ever 'Cruelly Hot Day' — Climate Change Is Rewriting the Thermometer

Japan hit above 40 degrees Celsius for the first time since creating a new weather category called 'kokushobi' — or 'cruelly hot day' — introduced in April 2026. The Japan Meteorological Agency coined the term to warn the public about extreme heat days that were once rare but are becoming more common. Workers have been advised to wear shorts to the office to cope.
