India Stuns World Champion in Lawn Bowls on Day One of Glasgow 2026
Times of IndiaยทFriday, 24 July 2026
Putul Sonowal pulled off a sensational upset against reigning world champion Ryan Bester of Canada in lawn bowls on the opening day of the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Women's pair Rupa Rani Tirkey and Pinki Singh also won a tense tie-break against Malta to advance. Sonowal was making his Commonwealth Games debut.
Why It Matters
India rarely grabs headlines in lawn bowls, so beating a world champion on debut is a genuinely surprising and encouraging result for the country's CWG campaign.
