Houthis Block Red Sea Gateway โ 12% of World Trade at Risk
The HinduยทTuesday, 21 July 2026
Yemen's Houthi movement announced a maritime embargo on Saudi Arabia, saying it begins immediately in response to a Saudi blockade of Yemeni ports and airports. The Bab el-Mandeb strait, which the Houthis aim to block, is the gateway to the Red Sea. Around 12% of the world's trade normally passes through it.
Why It Matters
India is a major trading nation and a large share of its exports and imports travel through the Red Sea. Any disruption at Bab el-Mandeb directly hits shipping costs and timelines for Indian businesses.
