Google-Backed Satellites Launch to Catch Wildfires Before They Spread

A set of satellites backed by Google, part of the FireSat program, have launched with the ability to detect wildfires that other satellites currently miss. The launch comes as thick smoke from wildfires already chokes parts of the US and Canada. FireSat is designed to spot fires earlier, giving responders more time to act.

Why It Matters

Wildfire detection from space is a growing field with implications for forest-fire-prone regions everywhere, including parts of India that face dry-season fires.
