China Calls British Steel Nationalisation a 'Severe Blow' to Its Confidence in the UK
The GuardianยทSaturday, 18 July 2026

China's government said it is 'strongly dissatisfied' after the UK nationalised British Steel this week, 15 months after the UK government first stepped in to prevent the closure of its Scunthorpe steelworks and the loss of 4,000 jobs. Beijing said the move dealt a 'severe blow to Chinese companies' confidence in investing in the UK'. The steel company had been owned by a Chinese firm.
Why It Matters
This is a sharp escalation in UK-China economic tensions, and signals that Western governments nationalising Chinese-owned assets will have real diplomatic consequences.
