India's ₹1.27 Lakh Crore Chip Mission: C-DAC to Build a Homegrown AI Chip by 2029

The Cabinet approved a ₹1.27 trillion Semicon 2.0 mission to build India's first indigenous AI inference chip, with C-DAC leading the effort. Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the chip could be ready as early as 2029 or 2030. The mission will also incentivize chip factories, startups, design firms, and research.

Why It Matters

India importing almost all its chips is a strategic and economic vulnerability. A homegrown AI chip could reduce that dependence and position India as a serious player in the global semiconductor race.
