Developing Nations Pay More on Debt Than Schools โ And India Should Pay Attention
The GuardianยทWednesday, 15 July 2026

A new UNESCO report found that 113 developing countries spent more repaying foreign debt in 2025 than on education. In sub-Saharan Africa, 18 countries spent five times more on debt than on schooling. Global aid to education is also predicted to fall by up to 30%.
Why It Matters
India operates in the same global development landscape as these countries. The trend of aid cuts and debt burdens squeezing education budgets is a warning sign for the entire developing world.
