AI Coding Tools Are Creating A New Cybersecurity Threat Called Slopsquatting

A new type of cyberattack called slopsquatting exploits the tendency of AI coding assistants to hallucinate — or make up — software package names. Attackers register those fake package names with malicious code, so when developers use AI-generated code, they unknowingly install infected software. The threat targets the software supply chain from the very first line of code.

Why It Matters

Anyone using AI tools to write code — from large companies to solo developers — could be exposed to this attack without knowing it.
