India Builds Its Own Shipping Containers to End Foreign Dependence

The government's ₹10,000 crore container manufacturing scheme from Union Budget 2026-27 has produced its first result: an India-made export-import container built by DCM Shriram Group was unveiled at Dadri on July 3 for shipping giant Maersk. Maersk has already placed a follow-on order for 1,000 more containers.

India's reliance on foreign containers has hurt exporters during global shipping disruptions. Building containers at home could make Indian trade cheaper and more resilient.
