113 Countries Spent More on Debt Repayment Than Education in 2025 โ India's Neighbours Hit Hard
The GuardianยทSaturday, 11 July 2026

A new UNESCO report reveals that in 2025, more than 113 developing countries spent more on repaying foreign debt than on educating their children. Eighteen countries spent five times more on debt than on education. Global aid to education is also predicted to fall by up to 30%.
Why It Matters
Several of India's neighbours in South Asia and Africa are among the hardest-hit developing nations, and the trend raises serious questions about regional stability and the future of young populations near India's borders.
