China's coast guard conducted patrols off Taiwan's eastern coast and, for the first time, radioed cargo ships passing Taiwan to ask about their crew and destination. Beijing claims Taiwan as its territory and asserts jurisdiction over the waters between the two. Foreign lawmakers also joined a Taiwan coast guard trip in response.
