AI Tools Can Be Weaponised to Build Massive Botnets, Researchers Warn
Ars Technica·Thursday, 9 July 2026

Researchers have found that nine of the most popular AI tools can be exploited by hackers to assemble large botnets. The attack method, called 'HalluSquatting', takes advantage of AI systems' tendency to hallucinate — making up package names or links that don't exist — which hackers then register and weaponise. This is a newly identified threat vector that affects widely used AI development tools.
Why It Matters
India has one of the world's largest developer communities, and many use the AI coding and productivity tools named in this research. A botnet built this way could target Indian infrastructure or businesses.
