UK Kills Education Programme That Was Helping Girls in India and Across Asia
The GuardianยทMonday, 6 July 2026

The British government has scrapped the Strengthening Higher Education for Female Empowerment (SHEFE) programme, just two years after launching it. The scheme aimed to keep 1 million girls in school across Africa, Asia, and the Middle East. It was cut as part of wider UK foreign aid reductions.
Why It Matters
Indian girls were among those the programme was designed to help. Aid cuts in education programmes can have a direct effect on access to schooling for girls in developing regions.
