NASA Launches Emergency Mission to Rescue a Space Telescope From Burning Up
The VergeยทMonday, 6 July 2026

NASA's Swift Observatory, launched in 2004, has had its orbit pushed dangerously low by recent solar storms and could burn up in Earth's atmosphere as soon as this year. To prevent this, NASA enlisted Katalyst Space Technologies, whose Link spacecraft launched Friday to intercept and potentially stabilize the observatory. The mission is a race against time.
Why It Matters
The Swift Observatory has contributed to global astronomy research, and losing it would be a setback for space science that affects researchers and institutions worldwide, including in India.
