Papua Separatists Kill American Pilot in Warning to US and Indonesia
The GuardianยทSunday, 5 July 2026

Separatist rebels from the West Papua National Liberation Army (TPNPB) shot dead an American pilot identified as Nicholas F. Gosse and set his civilian plane on fire in Indonesia's Papua region. A rebel spokesperson called it a deliberate 'message' to the US and Indonesian governments. The attack happened amid a long-running low-level independence struggle in the region.
Why It Matters
Indonesia is a key part of India's Act East policy and a major regional partner. Instability involving US citizens in Southeast Asia draws in global powers and could affect India's strategic calculations in the Indo-Pacific.
