Lamine Yamal, 18, Scores World Cup Goal and Joins Pelé and Messi in Rare Club
Times of India·Monday, 22 June 2026
Spain's Lamine Yamal scored in the 11th minute of Spain's World Cup match, becoming only the second player aged 18 or younger to score the opening goal for his country at a World Cup. The 18-year-old slid in at the far post to convert a low cross. Spain looked a visibly better team with him in the side.
Why It Matters
Yamal is already being talked about as the next global superstar of football. This goal puts his name alongside Pelé and Messi in the record books.
