US and Iran Reach Peace Deal, Strait of Hormuz Reopens โ But Hundreds of Ships Still Stuck
The HinduยทTuesday, 16 June 2026
Donald Trump announced a peace deal with Iran is 'now complete,' saying the Strait of Hormuz is open and the US will lift its naval blockade. However, maritime intelligence publication Lloyd's List estimates around 600 ships remain stranded west of the chokepoint. Trump had previously claimed US forces quietly helped about 200 vessels through since May.
Why It Matters
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world's most critical oil shipping lanes. India is a major importer of Gulf oil, so what happens here affects fuel prices and the economy at home.
