Amazon, Sony and Ericsson Likely Sourced Minerals From DRC Rebel-Controlled Mines

The Guardian·Tuesday, 16 June 2026

An investigation by Global Witness found that major global brands including Amazon, Sony and Ericsson likely sourced coltan — a mineral used in phones and electronics — from supply chains controlled by M23 rebels in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The M23 militia is accused of widespread sexual violence, summary executions and torture. The companies are said to have acquired the smuggled mineral unknowingly.

Why It Matters

Every smartphone user in the world, including in India, may be holding a device built with minerals tied to atrocities. This raises hard questions about supply chain accountability.
