New York Passes Law to Fine Companies for Fake 'Ghost Job' Postings

HR Dive - Latest News·Monday, 15 June 2026

New York has passed bill S8877, which would fine employers and third-party job platforms if their job postings do not include a timeframe for when — or whether — the role will actually be filled. The law targets so-called 'ghost jobs', listings that are never intended to be filled.

Why It Matters

Ghost job postings waste job seekers' time and fuel anxiety in an already uncertain job market. This is the first major law of its kind and could inspire similar rules elsewhere, including in India.
