Your Phone May Contain Minerals That Fund Armed Rebels in the DRC

The Guardian·Saturday, 13 June 2026

A Global Witness investigation found that global brands including Amazon, Ericsson, and Sony likely sourced coltan — a mineral used in phones and electronics — from supply chains controlled by M23 rebels in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The M23 group is accused of sexual violence, summary executions, and torture. The companies are said to have acquired the mineral unknowingly.

Why It Matters

India is one of the world's largest markets for smartphones and electronics. Indian consumers buying these products may unknowingly be part of a supply chain linked to atrocities.
