An investigation by Global Witness found that major companies including Amazon, Ericsson, and Sony likely sourced coltan — a mineral used in phones and electronics — from mines controlled by M23 rebels in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The rebels are accused of sexual violence, summary executions, and torture. The companies allegedly acquired the mineral unknowingly through their supply chains.

India is one of the world's largest markets for consumer electronics, meaning Indian consumers buying phones and devices could indirectly be part of this supply chain.
