Amazon, Sony and Ericsson Likely Bought Minerals Linked to Armed Rebels Accused of Atrocities in Congo

The Guardian·Thursday, 11 June 2026

An investigation by Global Witness found that major global brands including Amazon, Sony, and Ericsson likely sourced coltan — a mineral used in phones and electronics — from supply chains controlled by M23 rebels in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The M23 militia is accused of widespread sexual violence, summary executions, and torture. The companies allegedly acquired the smuggled mineral unknowingly.

Why It Matters

The phones and electronics most people use every day may contain minerals tied to violent armed groups, making this a consumer issue as much as a geopolitical one.
