An investigation by Global Witness found that major global brands including Amazon, Sony, and Ericsson likely sourced coltan — a mineral used in phones and electronics — from supply chains controlled by M23 rebels in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The M23 militia is accused of widespread sexual violence, summary executions, and torture. The companies allegedly acquired the smuggled mineral unknowingly.
